How do I remove the headlight/windshield wiper switches on a 1965 Mustang?
The headlight and windshield wiper switches are removed in different ways:
Headlight Switch To remove the headlight switch, you have to pull the knob out. Reach behind the dash and locate a small button on the side of the switch housing. It's a tight fit, but you have to depress this button and hold it in while pulling the knob straight out. It may take the flat side of a screwdriver to push the button, and it might require a hefty jerk to remove the knob, which is mounted on a shaft about 3 inches long. Once the knob is out, you will see a cross pattern inside the bezel. Use a large screw driver to turn the bezel counterclockwise. Removal of the bezel will release the switch housing from the dash. Windshield Wiper Switch To remove the windshield wiper switch, loosen the set screw which holds the knob onto the shaft. Unlike the headlight switch, the shaft remains in the switch. With the knob off, you will need to use something like a pair of needle nose pliers to loosen the bezel (the shaft is in the way, preventing use of a screwdriver). With the bezel off, the switch will be released from the dash, but watch for a metal cup that fits between the switch and the dash. Remember its orientation; you will need to put it back in the correct position when you replace the switch. |
